BIRDING TOUR ON TIERRA DEL FUEGO ISLAND

Season: October to April

Program: 5 Days-4 Nights

Highlights: Ruddy-headed Goose, Austral Canastero, Rufous-chested Dottorel. etc.

Day 1: RIO GRANDE. Arrival at the local airport and transfer to hotel. Lodging. Tour to the northern grasslands of Tierra del Fuego, one of the best areas to see the Ruddy-headed Goose.

In the area near the Atlantic coast, several seashore birds can be observed depending on the arrival time. A box lunch will be provided. Lodging in Rio Grande. The dinner is not included. Total number of kilometers for this day: 80.

Birds: Ruddy-headed Goose, Peregrine Falcon, Rufous-chested Dotterel, Two-banded Plover, American Golden Plover, Tawny-throated Dotterel, Ruddy Turnstone, Bird’s Sandpiper, White-rumped Sandpiper, Least bellied Seedsnipe, Common Miner, Short-billed Miner, Chocolate-vented Tyrant, Patagonian Yellow-Finch, etc.

Day 2: 7:00 AM. RIO GRANDE. Breakfast. Transfer to Ushuaia travelling through different landscapes: grassland with sheep farming; lagoons inhabited by waterfowl; the vast transitional area containing peat bogs and low deciduous Beech Forest. After passing Fagnano and Escondido Lakes, we cross the Fuegian Andes. On the way we will stop to see different bird species. A Box Lunch will be provided during the tour. Arrival in Ushuaia. Lodging.The dinner is not included. Total number of kilometers for this day: 230.

Birds: Magellanic Plover, Black-faced Ibis, Black-necked Swan, Upland Goose, Ashy–headed Goose, Kelp Goose, Southern Wigeon, Speckled Teal, Red Shoveler, Yellow-billed Pintail, Rosy-billed Pochard, Chimango Caracara, Southern Caracara, American Kestrel, Greater Yellowlegs, Lesser Yellowlegs, Whimbrel, Hudsonian Godwit, Wilson’s Phalarope, Austral Canastero, Austral Negrito, Austral Blackbird, Long–tailed Meadowlark, etc.

Day 3: 7:00 AM. USHUAIA. Breakfast. In the morning: Birding tour to Martial Glacier area. Upon reaching the High Andean vegetation, several bird species can be observed. Passing the timberline there is a good chance of seeing the Yellow-bridled Finch (habitat: 600 / 900 over sea-level). Lunch not included.

Birds: White–bellied Seedsnipe, Gray-flancked Cinclodes, Andean Tapaculo, Dark-faced Ground–Tyrant, Ochre–naped Tyrant, Yellow–bridled Finch, etc.

In the afternoon: Boat tour of the Beagle Channel up to the Magellanic Penguin colony. Different kinds of marine birds can be seen throughout the trip. Return to Ushuaia and lodging. Dinner not included. Duration: 6 hours.

Birds: Gentoo Penguin, Magellanic Penguin, Black–browed Albatross, Southern Giant Petrel, Southern Fulmar (spring), Magellanic Diving-Petrel, Common Diving-Petrel, Rock Cormorant, Imperial Cormorant, Flightless Steamer-Duck, Flying Steamer-Duck, Magellanic Oystercatcher, Blackish Oystercatcher, Snowy Sheathbill, Chilean Skua, Dolphin Gull, Kelp Gull, South American Tern, Dark-Bellied Cinclodes, Blackish Cinclodes (rare), etc.

Day 4: 8:00 AM. USHUAIA. Breakfast. Birding tour to the Tierra del Fuego National Park where Magellanic Woodpeckers, Black-browed Albatross and other birds can be observed in the Southern Beech Forests. Seabirds such as Kelp Geese and Steamer Ducks can be observed in the coastal areas. A box lunch will be provided during the tour. Return to Ushuaia and lodging. Dinner not included. Duration: 8 hours. Total number of kilometers for this morning: 60.

Birds: Great Grebe, White-tufted Grebe, Black-browed Albatross, Southern Giant Petrel, Black-faced Ibis, black-crowned Night-Heron, Black-necked Swan, Kelp Goose, Upland Goose, Ashy-headed Goose, Crested Duck, Spectacled Duck, Chiloe Wigeon, Yellow-billed Pintail, Speckled Teal, Flightless Steamer-Duck, Flying-Steamer Duck, Andean Condor, Turkey Vulture, Black-chested Buzzard-Eagle, Bicolor Hawk, White-throated Caracara, Crested Caracara, Chimango Caracara, Peregrine Falcon, American Kestrel, Magellanic Oystercatcher, Blackish Oystercatcher, Southern Lapwing, Common Snipe, South American Tern, Austral Parakeet, Great Horned Owl, Austral Pygmy-Owl, Ringed Kingfisher, Magellanic Woodpecker, Dark–bellied Cinclodes, Bar-winged Cinclodes, Thorn-tailed Rayadito, White–throated Treerunner, Fire-eyed Diucon, Austral Negrito, Tufted Tit–Tyrant, etc.

Day 5: USHUAIA. Breakfast. Transfer to the local airport. End of our services.
